Coastal Access

Mendocino Land Trust has pioneered the way in California for nongovernmental organizations to open and operate Offer-to-Dedicate public access trail easements (OTDs).  MLT was the first non-profit organization to open such a trail to the public at Mendocino Bay Overlook in 1996. MLT leads all nongovernmental organizations statewide (a total of 10 non-profits that have accepted OTDs in California) by operating more OTD easements than any other non-profit.

MLT's coastal access easement program primary funder is the State Coastal Conservancy.   These easements were conditions of coastal development permits, issued primarily by the California Coastal Commission.  The Coastal Commission's Coastal Access Program supports public access to the entire California coast.

Each of MLT's coastal access easments contributes to the local economy. These easements include trails at Mendocino Bay Overlook, Cantus Cove, and Belinda Point.  The location of these trails is shown on our conservation map.
