Coastal Trail

In August, 2006, the Mendocino Land Trust (MLT) received a grant for $200,000 from the State Coastal Conservancy to enable it to work collaboratively with the Coastal Conservancy, City of Fort Bragg, Coastwalk, California Department of Parks and Recreation, Bureau of Land Managment, and other stakeholders to plan for California Coastal Trail (CCT) segments on the central Mendocino Coast.

Mendocino County comprises 130 miles of coastline which presents a unique challenge and opportunity when planning for a contiguous Coastal Trail.  The proposed alignment for the CCT passes through some of the most rugged and scenic landscapes of the California coastline from the Lost Coast-Sinkyone Wilderness to charming small towns along Highway One.  Unfortunately, the CCT is currently over 60 percent on paved roads in Mendocino County.  It is one of the goals of this planning process to get the trail off the Highway One corridor and within sight and sound of the Pacific Ocean.

MLT will undertake a strategic-level analysis with recommendations for developing the Coastal Trail on public lands and investigate connectors to fill gaps in the CCT that are both evident now and need additional research.
