California Coastal Trail on Public Lands
Task One: Analyze and Recommend a Process for Developing the CCT on Public Lands
The Lands Trust is working with California State Department of Parks and Recreation to develop recommendations for CCT alignment through their coastal State Parks Units. For each of these units we are looking at: current trail conditions; proposed improvements; proposed new trail segments; connectors between Park ownerships; proposed visitor amenities such as restrooms, trailheads, signage, maps, picnic areas, viewing points, and parking; ADA feasibility; cultural and natural resources; estimated costs related to technical studies and construction; partners; and long-term managment schemes for the trail.
The outcome of this planning process will be a planning document State Parks and its partners can use in pursuing project funding for implementing CCT improvements and construction on public lands on the Mendocino coast.
MLT staff is also working with the Bureau of Land Managment (BLM) to develope CCT recommendations for the Stornetta Ranch Public Lands just north of Pt. Arena. This beautiful property was once an 1,860 acre ranch that includes over 2 miles of the coastline, the estuary of the Garcia River, adjacent beach, Sea Lion Rock, and links to the Manchester State Park to the north. In 2006 BLM aquired 1,132 acres of the ranch for public recreation.
