Navarro Blufflands Trail
Task 3: Implement Specific Segments of the California Coastal Trail in Mendocino County
The Land Trust will plan and design a CCT connecting segment from Navarro Point to the Campbell Offer-to-Dedicate (OTD) public access easement. This proposed segment will become an approximately 1 mile long section of the Coastal Trail with a trail terminus north of the Land Trust's Navarro Point Preseve. The Campbell OTD is a 10' vertical from Highway One and a 25' lateral bluff top easement with captivating views of the coastline north and south.
This trail segment will allow hikers to get off the highway along a dangerous stretch of road as well as allow visitors to the coast an opportunity to get out of their cars and walk through rare coastal praire.
This trail segment is a perfect example of the relationship between coastal access and coastal trail planning. Often the only legal place for the public to access or view the coastline is by way of a public access easement which take a great deal of time and money to properly open for public use. When taking on the responsibility of opening a public access trail, the Land Trust must wisely balance the need for environmental protection of resources and the public's right to enjoy those resources.
