Nature Appreciation
August 2022: caught on camera
July 2022: Friday Intern Reports
“Nature Watch Wednesday” needed a little vacation in July. Luckily the MLT interns are here to pick up the slack! Mia and Khalil have been writing “Friday Intern Reports” posts for MLT Social Media each week, and you might not be surprised to hear there is a whole lot of nature appreciation in there! Also, art, philosophy, butterflies and deep thoughts.
June 2022: Wednesday Weed Day
Wednesday Weed Day? No, not the type of weed Mendocino County is famed for… in June we wrote about those undesirable plants that sometimes take over to the detriment of native flora and fauna.
A worthwhile note: Are these “invasive plants” or “displaced relatives”. We were introduced to this concept when we heard a radio interview with Indigenous scholar and scientist Jessica Hernandez. In her book Fresh Banana Leaves she writes:
“We are taught as Indigenous peoples that regardless of whether this plant belongs there or not, we must ask its spirit for permission… we acknowledge them as displaced relatives rather than invasive species…”
However you frame the subject, we hope you will find these Wednesday Nature Facts and the stories behind these weeds / displaced relatives as fascinating as we did!
